Convert a file

Drop in a picture, a document or a recording and turn it into another format. Before it runs you are told what this particular pair will do to this particular file; afterwards the result is read back and you are told what actually happened.

Drag & drop your file here

or paste from the clipboard

Reads metadata in: JPEG · PNG · WebP · HEIC/HEIF · AVIF · MP4 · QuickTime MOV · WebM · PDF · MP3 · WAV · M4A

Your file never leaves your device. Processing happens entirely in your browser.

What you are told beforehand

The warnings are derived from the two formats and from what the file in front of you actually carries. A colour-profile warning on a file with no profile is noise, and noise is what teaches people to stop reading warnings — so it only appears when there is a profile to lose.

You also see what it will download. Codecs are large and most conversions need none of them, so each one is fetched from this site only when a route asks for it, and the size is stated before you start rather than spent quietly.

What you are told afterwards

The output is read back by the same engine that read the input, and the difference is measured rather than predicted. Where the two disagree, the measurement is what gets shown.

Metadata fields are reported in three groups, not two: the ones that came across unchanged, the ones that are present under a different value because the new format writes them differently, and the ones that are not there at all. A date that arrives without its timezone has not been lost, and saying so would send you looking for something that is sitting right in front of you.

Conversion

27 conversions, every one of them run in a browser against a real file of that format before it was listed here — the file is named in the last column. Conversion happens in your browser like everything else: the codecs are served from this site, fetched only when a conversion needs one, and the size below is what that costs the first time.

What is not offered, and why

Video
Video conversion is not in this build. The only browser tool that does it downloads about thirty megabytes before it starts and runs out of memory on a phone, which is worse than not offering it. Reading, cleaning and editing a video works as it always has.
Anything into HEIC
Converting other image formats into HEIC encoding is not offered here because HEVC encoders are patent-encumbered, which is a different problem from a hard one, and a file almost nothing outside Apple will open is a poor thing to convert to in any case. Existing HEIC files can be inspected, cleaned, edited losslessly or converted out to JPEG, PNG, WebP, AVIF or PDF.
Anything into a document other than PDF
A picture can be wrapped in a PDF because a PDF can carry a JPEG exactly as it stands, losing nothing. Writing a Word or Pages file means writing an office format, which is a different product rather than a missing feature.
A PDF with more than one page
Only the first page is converted, because the output is a single picture. A document with more pages says so before you start, and says how many are being left behind.
An encrypted or password-protected PDF
A document that will not open without a password cannot be rendered, and this build does not ask for one. Remove the protection in the application that applied it, then convert the result.

Frequently asked questions

Is my file uploaded to convert it?

No. The conversion runs in your browser, like everything else here. The codecs are served from this site rather than from anyone else, so a conversion contacts no third party and the file itself goes nowhere.

Why is converting a HEIC slower than converting a JPEG?

No browser except Safari can decode HEIC, so one has to be downloaded — about 680 KB, once, after which the browser keeps it. A JPEG needs nothing extra because your browser already reads JPEG.

Does converting to PNG improve a JPEG?

No, and it usually makes the file much bigger for nothing. PNG can hold everything it is given, but nothing already lost comes back: what the JPEG threw away when it was made stays thrown away.

What happens to a Content Credential?

It ends. A Content Credential binds to the exact pixels it was written for, so re-encoding them breaks the binding — no tool can carry one across a conversion. If the record matters, keep the original alongside the converted copy.

Why can it not convert video?

The only way to do it in a browser downloads about thirty megabytes before it converts anything and runs out of memory on a phone. That is not slow, it is broken, and shipping it would be a worse answer than saying it is not here. Reading, cleaning and editing a video works as it always has.

Can I keep the metadata when I convert?

Yes, and it is on by default. Fields the new format can hold are written into it afterwards; fields it has nowhere to keep are listed in the result rather than silently dropped. You can also turn the carry off, in which case the output keeps only what the format itself writes.
